The Role of Nurse Practitioners in Fertility Preservation
Oncology nurse practitioners (NPs) encompass the roles of direct caregiver, educator, consultant, administrator, and researcher. Oncology NPs extend their skills to all care delivery settings where patients experiencing, or at risk for developing, cancer receive health care, education, and counseling for all issues surrounding cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The Oncology NP plays a vital role in helping a newly diagnosed cancer patient explore fertility options. Many times, the NP is the first person to discuss the impact of cancer treatment on fertility with a patient. With an interdisciplinary approach, the NP can help provide fertility preservation education and most importantly, direct a patient where to find more information.
Non-Malignant Conditions
If you are an NP practicing in a different health care specialty, you may find our non-malignant condition summaries helpful. Many patients have non-malignant conditions (or treatments) which impair fertility. Learn more about these conditions as well as the available fertility preservation options.
