Progesterone only pills must be taken at the same time every day. Its efficacy relies on compliance with a typical use failure rate of 8-9%. (10) Up to 10% of users will develop amenorrhea after one year of use. Side effects may include breakthrough bleeding, headaches, nausea, acne and breast tenderness. Its risks are minimal. (8)
Progestin-only pills during treatment:
High dose progestin pills can be given for menstrual lightening or suppression. Typically, amenorrhea can be achieved in a short period of time (1 to 3 days), this method is very safe and effective. Possible side effects are acne, weight gain, headache and mood disturbance. This treatment relies on compliance and regular timing for taking the medication.
There are a few options for treatment with high dose progestin pills, which are: Norethindrone Acetate (ex. Aygestin 5 to 20 mg once or twice a day), medroxyprogesterone and danazol.
Low-dose progestin-only pills are given continuously are also an option for menstrual suppression. Rate of amenorrhea is lower but side effects are lower too.
