Your Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN) may be a key member of your oncofertility health care team.
OBGYNs are doctors who specialize in female reproductive health, including early detection, screening, and treatment of cancer. Cancer can develop in any organ of the reproductive system, including: the breasts, uterus, ovaries, cervix, vagina, and vulva. As with other forms of cancer, the earlier gynecologic cancer is detected, the greater the chance of successful treatment. Cancer of the reproductive system and/or its treatment may affect future fertility.
Whether you have been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer or are at high risk of devloping one, your OBGYN can help you with your oncofertility care. Your OBGYN is a fertility expert and therefore is well-equipped to discuss your fertility preservation options with you or refer you to a reproductive endocrinologist.
