With advancements in cancer treatment, the long-term survival rate for many patients has now significantly improved. However, many cancer treatments can cause a loss of fertility. Fortunately, advancements also have been made in reproductive medicine ─ so there are more options for preserving fertility.

Mayo Clinic offers fertility preservation through a close partnership between the departments of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Urology, Hematology & Oncology as well as the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center.  As a member of the Oncofertility Consortium, Mayo Clinic also collaborates with a team of multidisciplinary experts across the nation to provide the most current procedures to patients who seek options for fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment. Specifically, Mayo Clinic physicians:

  1. Provide education to patients about the impact their chemotherapy or radiation treatment options may have on their future fertility.
  2. Consult with patients to develop a personalized plan for fertility preservation, aligned with each patient’s diagnosis, treatment plan and age.
  3. Actively research methods for fertility preservation, providing patients with the latest advancements in reproductive medicine.

Mayo Clinic offers a variety of services to pediatric, adolescent and adult patients to preserve fertility in patients faced with cancer and its associated treatment. Fertility preservation procedures performed or being investigated at Mayo Clinic include:
