The Human Reproduction Center of the HCFMRP-USP was founded in 1992 to provide treatment for reproductive disorders for public health assistance. Today, coordinated by Professor Rui Alberto Ferriani MD, PhD, more than 120 ART cycles are performed monthly, with little cost for patients due to the Brazilian public healthcare system. The oncofertility program started in 2010, and is coordinated by Professor Ana Carolina Japur de Sá Rosa e Silva MD, PhD, providing fertility preservation for cancer patients using embryo and oocyte cryopreservation, and more recently ovarian tissue cryopreservation in special cases.
Since its formation, this center has been involved in developmental research related to assisted reproductive techniques and more recently with cryobiology. Research in this field includes ovarian tissue cryopreservation techniques and their clinical applications. Studies involving immature follicular culture extracted from the fresh and thawed tissue have been developed in partnership with Professor Mary Zelinski PhD, from the Oregon Health and Science University in the U.S.A ,and with Professor José Ricardo Figueiredo PhD, from the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil.
