Rede Brasileira de Oncofertilidade – reBOC

The Brazilian Oncofertility Consortium® (BOC) was officially created in 2013.  Known nationally in Brazil as Rede Brasileira de Oncofertilidade – reBOC, the network whose director is Dr. Jhenifer Rodrigues, PhD, gathers professional members together to share experiences, materials, research protocols and ideas. This collaboration stimulates partnerships in research projects and increases the discussion about the options for fertility preservation of cancer patients in the country. The foundation of the BOC is critical. Through this Brazilian network, cancer patients are navigated to key centers of Assisted Reproduction with the most advanced research protocols for cryopreservation of semen, oocytes, embryos and ovarian tissue to preserve their fertility, and receive psychological treatment to aid in the decision-making process. The network includes the founders centers which are: Pró-Criar Medicina Reprodutiva (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais -  Southeast); Huntington Medicina Reprodutiva (São Paulo, São Paulo – Southeast); Human Reproduction lab of Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto/University of São Paulo (Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo – Southeast); Fertilitat Centro de Medicina Reprodutiva (Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul – South); Laboratory of oocytes and preantral follicles manipulation – LAMOFOPA/State University of Ceará (Fortaleza, Ceará – North) and integral members centers which are: Human Reproduction Lab of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais – Southeast); Gênesis Centro de Assistência em Reprodução Humana (Brasília, Distrito Federal - Centereastern), and Cenafert Centro de Medicina Reprodutiva (Salvador, Bahia – Northeast). The official formation of the network was consolidated in a meeting that took place on April 11th, 2013 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and was attended by Dr. Teresa Woodruff, PhD. At that time, many participants from the founders centers were present. On April 12th the First Brazilian Oncofertility Consortium® Symposium was hosted, when Dr. Woodruff gave a talk directed to medical students, gynecologists, urologists and oncologists about the fertility preservation in cancer patients. Efforts in Brazil are being made to bridge the gap between the oncologists and reproductive specialists to help inform cancer patients about their fertility preservation options and reproductive future.
