On February 14, 2011, California state assembly member Anthony Portantino introduced legislation, AD 428, which would mandate that health insurance plans cover the cost of fertility preservation. The legislation would cover patients in California suffering from conditions whose treatment plans, such as chemotherapy, could threaten their fertility. Members of the Oncofertility Consortium have writen scholarly discussions on the need and arguments for this and similar legislation that would give patients the ability to focus on both life-saving treatment options and fertility preservation without having to choose between the two. If passed, AD 428 would go into effect January 1, 2012 and hopefully encourage more states to introduce similar legislation.
